Joe Bigger was Belfast pork butcher, wealthy businessman, town councillor, who passed into history as the ‘architect of obstruction’ in the British House of Commons in the 1880s.

By 1874 he was elected as Home Rule MP for County Cavan and became a major figure in the Irish Parliamentary Party. It was really Joseph Bigger, along with the young Charles Stuart Parnell, who pioneered the policy of ‘filibustering’ in the House of Commons.
